The Water Mill - 1
Inside the mill a system of huge gears, linked to the waterwheel, drives the millstone which grinds the grain into flour. The vertical gear, which is connected to the millwheel by the shaft running across the centre of the picture, drives the horizontal gear above it, and that turns the vertical shaft which goes up to the grindstone on the floor above. The grindstone, turning on its shaft, crushes the grain against a stationary stone and grinds it into flour. The miller can adjust the gap between the grindstone and the fixed stone to give finer or coarser flour.
