THE LYING LIPS
I get irritated when people assume I share their superstitions. Anyone who asks what my star sign is, gets told 'I don't have one. I was born under the sign of the Cross'. For the first 40 years of my life I lived in houses numbered 13. At my wedding I wore green nail varnish, and my wedding cake was black. Despite the predictions of gloom from my superstitious friends, we are still together 30 years later, so I don't think the pigment in my nail varnish can have been very influential.

But the category that really makes me mad is seances. So often the people who do it are making money out of vulnerable people. In my time as a grief counsellor I saw first hand the damage done to people who had been persuaded to try to contact their dead loved ones. It took years of counselling to try to repair the damage, and sometimes we failed, and the person was left with a lifetime of fears and anxiety. Their money had been taken and their peace of mind stolen by dabbling in the occult, and they could not complete their grief and move on.

So I am quite hostile to all superstition, but especially to dabbling in the occult by using the Ouija board and seances, which may seem 'just a bit of fun' to many people, but have the potential to damage the vulnerable permanently.
